I'm a therianthrope! I was Awakened a couple of months ago. My theriotype/phenotype would be a coyote! I am thrilled, and my awakening (if that's what you really want to call it,) went like this:
I was dreaming. I knew I was dreaming, because the dream in question was Lucid. I knew it was about three in the morning.
My dream is one of my generic fantasies: turning into an animal. It started out like thus:
I was in the forest beside my house, with my dog. There was something chasing us, and I knew it was going to kill me and eat me, but I wasn't scared. Chilli (the dog) was, but he didn't run away and stayed by my side loyally. Anyway, the creature who was chasing us burst into the clearing where I was. Chilli fled, but I was eaten. But when I was eaten, I felt the most amazing sense of happiness ever, and my mind sort of merged with the creature's. Then I woke up.
I'd had this dream before, several nights in a row, where the creature was chasing me. I only got the tiniest glimpse of the creature, and it looked like a small wolf. But wolf didn't feel quite right, so, yesterday, when I stumbled on a picture of a coyote, I found out what it was.
Therianthropy doesn't affect me greatly, aside from feeling different from everyone else. I've felt this all my life, and when we "pretended" to be dogs/wolves/jakals in school, it wasn't really pretend for me. I felt so different, that I immediately fell upon the first conclusion that came with my night-dog fantasies: I was a werewolf. That's a 8 year old mind at work.
Anyhoo, I often get mental shifts when I sleep, resulting in sudden dream-changes from my usual, human dreams, to dreams of running very fast through a pine forest in the sunlight. I also tend to walk digitgrade (on my toes, like my phenotype) because it feels better. There are other, smaller details, but I won't bore you with those.
I first heard of therianthropy early last year, after reading Goldenwolf's personal therianthropy. When I read it, the first thing I felt was relief, because I wasn't alone.
